Match Report -- Season 2005-6
Thames Valley Counties Women's Football League
Division 2 (South)
9th October 2005
Wycombe Wanderers Reserves 2
AFC Newbury Ladies Reserves 1
Newbury were desperately unlucky not to get a point from this game when Wycombe scored in injury time with the referee blowing the final whistle 5 seconds after the restart. Only inexperience let Newbury down in the final moments of this game when, rather than kick the ball off the pitch, Newbury tried to keep the ball in play only to lose the ball a give the Wycombe striker a chance to beat Newbury’s excellent keeper, Holly Randall, who made contact with the ball which just crept over the line.

The game opened with Wycombe applying early pressure and but for 2 excellent early saves by Holly Newbury could easily have been 2-0 down in the first 5 minutes. Newbury settled and began to take control of the midfield with Rachel Butler and Elli Reed particularly active. As Newbury started to gain control of the midfield Wycombe, who had won their previous game 10-0, started to get unsettled amongst themselves, which only served to encourage the Newbury players. Newbury deservedly went ahead after 35 minutes from a corner by Elli Reed with Lucy Ward scoring, being one of 3 Newbury players competing to get the ball into the net. Soon after this Pam Hartley was judged offside when Newbury could have made the score 2-0.

The second half saw a committed Wycombe really trying to take back control of the game and after 7 minutes the were rewarded with a dubious penalty when the ball seemed to hit the shoulder of Lorna Parr who was having another fine game as centre back. The penalty was well taken giving Holly no chance to save. Playing downhill Wycombe came on strongly but Newbury did not flinch under pressure and were really unlucky to concede the final goal in injury time. This team is really making progress and can look forward to a bright future.
