AFC Newbury Ladies Reserves Football
Match Report -- Season 2005-6
Thames Valley Counties Women's Football League
Division 2 (South)
25th September 2005
Wexham Wanderers 6 AFC Newbury Reserves 2
With 4 players not available due to FA Cup and other commitments the reserve team featured 2 players who didn't play in the opening match of the season last week, including new signing Elli Reed. The team and management are still leaning about this level of football but again there was much to be encouraged about. For 65 minutes Newbury held their own against a competent side who were playing their first league match. Wexham elected to play down hill with the wind and pressed the Newbury goal for much of the half. Newbury’s defence held out well, in particular Lorna Parr was having an excellent and lively game. All the defenders made crucial contributions clearing the line, but the outstanding performance came from Holly Randall in goal including a spectacular one handed save, just before halftime, made after the spectators had started to applaud a goal. Unfortunately for Newbury and Holly, Wexham scored within seconds of the halftime whistle to make the score 1-0 to the home side at the break.

Newbury had the advantages in the second half and scored an excellent goal within 5 minutes of the restart. Lucy Ward making no mistake from a cross from the right by Pam Hartley. Wexham came back again shortly after this but Newbury were soon on the attack again and the ball came out from the Wexham area to Sian Makepeace on the left who scored with an excellent shot high and wide of the keeper into the top right hand corner of the net. Wexham immediately replied and with Lorna having to go off injured the reorganised Newbury defence started to struggle. Newbury were not finished and Elli Reed had an easy chance to score but was inexplicably ruled offside by the linesman who must have been watching another game. The final 15 minutes saw Newbury concede 3 more goals as their defence tired and failed to contain the revitalised Wexham attack.
