AFC Newbury Ladies Reserves Football
Match Report -- Season 2005-6
Thames Valley Counties Women's Football League
Division 2 (South)
18th September 2005
AFC Newbury Ladies Reserves 1 Reading Girls Youth 8
This was the first competitive game for the newly formed AFC Newbury Ladies Reserve team playing in the Thames Valley League division 2 (south). Reading opened the game applying a lot of pressure on the Newbury defence but it was not until 15 minutes into the game that they got a shot on target which was well saved by Holly Randall in goal. Reading almost immediately got another shot in hitting the left hand post which just rebounded over the line for Reading’s first goal. Holly was again on hand to make 3 more good saves including a superb one handed save after half an hour. Newbury then relieved the pressure when Christina Brown broke through the middle to beat the central defenders and the keeper with a well taken shot to level the scores. Unfortunately for Newbury Reading immediately restored the lead making the score 2-1 at half time.

Reading started the second half well capitalising on some confusion between the Newbury defence and midfield to score 3 quick goals before Newbury regained some composure with an excellent shot by Lucy Ward which was deflected wide of the goal. Lucy was unlucky not to score again when the keeper just managed to reach a shot that was on target. The game ended with Reading overcoming on a tiring Newbury defence to win 8-1. Regardless of the final score there was much to be encouraged about in this game for the future. Several players were playing their first competitive match against a well organised team that looks likely to feature in the promotion places in this league.
