| Newbury continued from where they left off last week with a commendable performance against Marlow of Division 1 in the League Plate. Initially the home side had most of the possession but after the opening 10 minutes the Newbury midfield began to get the upper hand. It was thus slightly against the run of play that Marlow got the first real shot on goal after 15 minutes. Holly Randall, in goal, saved well. Newbury failed to clear the corner and Marlow gained the lead with a shot over Holly into the back of the net. From the restart Newbury created an excellent move down the left which finished with a Rachel Butler shot on goal. The game was now very even with Holly making another save followed by a Shot by Pam Hartley. On the half hour Newbury were awarded a free kick just outside the box which Sian Makepeace put just wide of the left hand post. 4 minutes later Sian took another free kick this time on the right. From the clearance Lauren Sheldon had a shot saved by the Marlow keeper. Newbury continued to press as half time approached with shots from Lorna Parr and Sian.
The second half opened with a change in formation for Newbury as Lorna had sustained a calf injury. This left the Newbury defence and midfield weakened as Rachel Butler, who was making a big contribution in the first half, had to play centre back. This meant that Newbury’s domination at the end of the first half was ended. The game was quite even but after 20 minutes Marlow were awarded a somewhat soft penalty which was converted well giving Holly absolutely no chance. The remaining 25 minutes saw the division 1 team gain the upper hand and Newbury and particularly Holly had to work hard to keep Marlow from scoring. Marlow gained a 3rd goal when Newbury failed to clear the ball with a well driven shot which went in off the post.
