Match Report -- Season 2005-6
Thames Valley Counties Women's Football League
League Cup Preliminary Round
30th October 2005
AFC Newbury Reserves 0 Oxford United Reserves 4
In a bizarre pre-match start both team’s Goalkeepers were injured in the warm up before the match. This meant that Lucy Ward was in goal for Newbury. The goalkeeper problems continued as Oxford’s reserve keeper broke her ankle just 6 minutes into the game when challenging for the ball on the edge of the area. The game was very even in the first half with both teams having scoring chances. Kendall Gilmour went closest for Newbury with a fine free kick from outside the area, but it was Oxford who opened the scoring after 38 minutes when Newbury failed to clear a cross from the left. In the remaining minutes of the half Oxford increased the pressure gaining several corners.

Newbury opened the second half well and had an early scoring opportunity when Kendall put Pam Hartley through but the keeper saved well. Oxford then scored a second with a well taken shot into the corner which Lucy was unable to reach. Lucy was on hand then to make an excellent double save to deny Oxford a third goal. Oxford were now winning the midfield battle and Lucy was called into action to make 2 further excellent saves. Sian Makepeace and Lauren Sheldon also cleared the line. With 5 minutes to go Oxford struck a third when the shot took a deflection to beat the keeper who was really unlucky to concede a fourth in the last minute of the game to give Oxford a slightly flattering 4-0 win.
