AFC Newbury Ladies Football
Match Report -- Season 2005-6
Southern Region Women's Football League Division 1
12th March 2006
AFC Newbury 2 MK Wanderers 3
Newbury made significant changes in both players and formation for this game compared to the previous week’s game against Thatcham. Four regular reserve team players were in the squad with two starting in a 4-3-3 formation. The first 5 minutes were evenly contested as Newbury adjusted to the new formation. MK were a little quicker on the ball but it was Newbury who had the first shot on goal after 5 minutes when Kendall Kilmour shot to the right of the posts from 25 yards. The next 10 minutes saw Newbury have shots by Caz Harkness, Colleen Geis and Kendall. It was Kendall who opened the scoring with a well taken shot low to the keeper’s right. Leanne Creese then had an shot before Colleen put an excellent shot over the keeper’s head to make the score 2-0 to Newbury. Leanne then had another chance to score. It was half an hour into the game that MK had their 1st attempt on goal. This resulted in an excellent save by Chloe Hunt who finger tipped the ball onto the bar and then collected the rebound at the feet on the attacker. In the next five minutes Kendall, Colleen and Chelsea all shot wide while Leanne hit the side netting. MK were starting to get into the game and were rewarded with a goal when their centre forward challenged Chloe on the edge of the area. The goal was awarded despite protests from the Newbury bench. Kendall immediately had another shot saved but it was MK who ended the half strongly as the Newbury midfield tired.

The second half saw Newbury’s keeper on pitch at right back with reserve team keeper Holly Randall playing in goal. Holly was really unlucky when MK equalised with an unstoppable shot high over her head. The game was now really even both teams winning corners. Unfortunately for Newbury midway into the half MK scored to give them the lead. Again Holly had absolutely no chance when the Newbury defence did not pick up the player on the ball who struck an excellent shot in off the left hand post. Ami Blethyn came on for Caz who had to go to casualty with a damaged wrist and late arrival Lisa Duncan came on for left back Kelly Doe in an attempt to salvage a point. Chloe Hunt was in the action a lot from right back including one strong 50/50 challenge which resulted in the MK player temporarily leaving the pitch. Kendall had an opportunity late in the game to equalise but unfortunately the shot was comfortable for the keeper.

All in all this was a good performance. If Newbury had converted more of their chances in the first 30 minutes then they would undoubtedly have come out as winners. MK stuck to their game when other teams might have folded and as a result gained a win which keeps them in the Division 1 title chase.
