AFC Newbury Ladies Football
Match Report -- Season 2005-6
Southern Region Women's Football League Division 1
26th February 2006
AFC Newbury 3 Burnham Ladies 0
Burnham started this game where they left off in their home game attacking the Newbury goal with some vigour with Newbury somewhat lethargic in the opening minutes. This was somewhat ironic in view of the fact that they were a player short. Within 5 minutes Newbury were lucky not to go one down when a shot from outside the box hit the bar. Newbury slowly started to get into the game and Kendall Gilmour shot wide on her first attempt after 8 minutes. Leanne Creese was now making progress down the right making several crosses that were dealt with by the keeper. 14 minutes into the game Newbury won the ball deep in their own half. Kelly Stokes put the ball forward to Colleen Geis who played a square ball into central midfield to Caz Harkness who immediately put a through ball to Leanne who cut in from the right to beat the keeper for the first Newbury goal. 10 minutes later Kelly Stokes, who was now having a major influence on the game, played the ball to Caz who instantly worked the ball forward, this time to Kendall who easily beat the keeper for Newbury's second. Kendall and Colleen had further opportunities to score but were unable to increase the lead. By now Newbury's numerical advantage in defence and midfield was beginning to tell but the Burnham defence was managing to snuff out the Newbury attacks.

The opening period of the second half saw the play relatively even but soon Newbury began to exert more pressure. Caz and Leanne won several corners but Newbury were unable to convert these. Kelly Stokes, Colleen and Kendall all failing to get the ball into the net. Finally half an hour into the half Colleen made the score 3-0. The final 15 minutes saw Kendall's shot saved, a Colleen shot deflected onto the post and shots by Caz and Colleen going over the bar.

Newbury had lots of opportunities to get a hat full of goals, with more care taken in front of goal, while Burnham's only real opportunity came in the first 5 minutes of the game. Hopefully Newbury will be more accurate in Sunday's local derby against Thatcham in the Southern Region Chairman's Cup Quarter Final to be played at Faraday Road Stadium.
