Match Report -- Season 2005-6
Southern Region Women's Football League Division 1
4th September 2005
Oxford City Reserves 0 AFC Newbury 3
Newbury opened this first league match of the season somewhat tentatively with Oxford quickly getting into the Newbury goal area and causing Newbury some initial concern. It was several minutes before Newbury started to settle and get into the Oxford half. However once Newbury got into their stride the play was very much in the Oxford half leaving the Newbury keeper, Chloe Hunt ,only the occassional break to deal with. The re-arranged midfield, with Colleen Geis playing her first full league match and with Sue Hewett only her second full league match, started to get complete control of the game and it was surprising that Newbury were unable to score in the first half. Kendall Gilmour hit the cross bar from outside the box with the Oxford keeper stranded and the keeper made and excellent diving save to keep out a shot by Leanne Creese. Emma Theochari at left back was also having an excellent game both in defence and attack down the left wing while Leanne completely dominated the right hand side of the pitch.

The second half saw Newbury initially switch to three at the back with five in midfield. Newbury continued to press with plenty of the attacking coming down the right with Leanne continuing to dominate. Kendall had a chance early on but it was substitute Kate Pike who had the next opportunity to score. Unfortunately she was brought down in the act of shooting and had to go off injured. From crosses by Leanne Colleen just failed to make contact and Kendall headed over the bar. There were shots by Caz, Leanne and Kendall saved by the keeper when finally following neat interplay between Caz and Colleen Kendall was able to beat the keeper with a well taken shot low to the keeper's left into the corner of the goal. Further midfield play created shooting opportunities for Colleen, Caz and Kendall. This included a spectacular save by the keeper diving backwards and pushing the ball over the bar. Finally Gemma Povey played a neat through ball for Caz who extended the lead to 2-0 with a well taken shot into the top corner of the net. Not long after this a break by Oxford was scrambled clear after a save by Chloe rebounded of an attacker. Further attacks on the Oxford goal by Kendall, Colleen and Leanne were kept out before finally Caz scored her second somehow getting through a packed defence before having a shot from near the penalty spot, placing the ball low to the keeper's right.
