AFC Newbury Girls Under 15 Football
Match Report -- Season 2004-5
Tri-counties Conference
20th March 2005
Ascot Diamonds 0 AFC Newbury 2
A somewhat bizarre game was played in 3 periods on 2 pitches. There was a double booking at the Charters School facility so rather than delay the game for 40 minutes it was agrred to play on a free full sized pitch starting in 20 minute periods. This proved somewhat disconcerting for the players with only 9-a-side and both teams found it difficult to link attack to defence due to the length of the pitch. Newbury if anything played the neater football but could not break down a solid defence and generally were shooting from distance allowing the keeper to make comfortable saves. Ascot looked very dangerous on the break particularly down the right hand side.

After the first 20 minute period the teams changed ends. With Ascot now playing down hill Georgie Bingham, at left back, had to work very hard in a very physical contest with the Ascot right wing who was closely supported by their right midfield. The referee had to calm down the Ascot players who were constantly disputing decisions. However after 2 periods the game was still 0-0.

For the 3rd period the game had to be relocated to the correct pitch. This was a level pitch of correct dimensions. This helped Newbury who were now able to play a more connected game. The distances meant that the ball could be played out of defence through midfield and to the attack using both wings. Ascot's route was only down the right and by now Georgie was well in control of their winger. Half way through this final period Lucy Ward got on the end of a cross from the left and made no mistake to give Newbury a lead they never looked like losing. Zoe Davie made victory certain, minutes from time, with a well taken corner from the left that curled in to the top right hand corner of the net beating both keeper and defender on the line.
