Match Report -- Season 2004-5
Thames Valley Counties Women's League Division 1
10th April 2005
Mansfield Road Ladies 0 AFC Newbury 4
Newbury had a comfortable win to seal the league title in their final league match of the season. Newbury dominated this game from beginning to end against a team whose game plan was clearly to keep the score to the minimum. On a compact pitch Mansfield Road were content to defend deep and get as many players behind the ball as possible, breaking up field only very rarely. Newbury opened the game with early shots by Chelsea Starbuck, Kendall Gilmour and Sam Sowerby. It was Chelsea who, after 10 minutes, eased the pressure on the players to win this vital match by scoring an excellent goal after running onto an neat pass from Emma Theochari playing left back. Kendall had a free kick from outside the box well saved by the keeper and then Kelly Doe, playing right back, had a long high shot just saved by the keeper. Five minutes later Kendall had another free kick from an almost identical position and this time the keeper was unable to stop the ball going into the top right hand corner of the net. The remainder of the half saw further shots by Leanne Creese, Chelsea, Kendall, Sam Sowerby and Caz Harkness but none were able to beat the keeper.

The second half saw much of the same but included a shot by substitute Lorna Parr which the players claimed was a goal, the ball appearing to go through a hole in the net! Chelsea added to the score with another well taken goal, this time a low hard shot to the left of the keeper. Finally six minutes from time Sam was rewarded with a goal from a cross from the right. This left Newbury with an anxious wait for the result from Denham who kept up the pressure to the very end with an 8-2 victory over Woodstock but they were unable to overcome Newbury’s superior goal difference.

Next Sunday Newbury go for the league double in the cup final against Woodstock Town to be played at Chalfont St. Peter FC. Kick off at 4 p.m.
