AFC Newbury Ladies Football
Match Report -- Season 2004-5
Thames Valley Counties Women's League Division 1
13th February 2005
AFC Newbury 1 Denham Utd Youth 4
Newbury went into this game with Denham as joint leaders on points with the advantage of goal difference to Newbury and with 2 games in hand over Denham. Winning this game would therefore have given Newbury a clear advantage in league championship. Newbury however failed to repeat their earlier league victory away at Denham and made the race for the title much more competitive.

The early morning hail and snow threatened to cause a postponement as there were large areas of standing water on the pitch. It was agreed to delay the kickoff while attempts were made to clear the water. The sun and drying wind helped the process and the referee declared the pitch fit for play to start 40 minutes late. Denham played with the strong wind in the first half and kept Newbury pinned into their half for long periods but Newbury were first to score when Sam Sowerby added to her recent tally with a slightly mishit shot to defeat the keeper low to her left. Denham equalised with an even odder overhead shot which looped over the stranded Newbury keeper, Chloe Hunt. Towards halftime Denham went into the lead after their centre forward broke through the middle and placed the shot wide of the advancing keeper.

Although down 2-1 at half time there did not seem reason to be too concerned as the wind would be in Newbury's favour in the second half. It was not to be. Denham dominated the second half and although Newbury had opportunities these were cleaned up by the Denham defence and the shots were generally within easy reach of their keeper. Denham always looked lively on the break and took their opportunities well with 2 shots just under the bar out of the keeper's reach to give a disappointing final score of 1-4.
