Match Report -- Season 2004-5
Thames Valley Counties Women's League Division 1
30th January 2005
Morris Motors 1 AFC Newbury 5
This was expected to be a tricky match for Newbury. Morris Motors play an aggressive game on a tight pitch. Conditions which Newbury have found difficulty in overcoming on previous occasions. Newbury however started very brightly and were unlucky not to score within the first minute. After several attacks Caz Harkness opened the scoring with a left footed stike over the head of the advancing keeper after she had been put through by a neat pass from Kendall Gilmour. However Newbury lost the lead shortly after this when Morris scored from a well taken header from a corner. Morris could then easily have taken the lead when Emma Theochari cleared off the line but the referee disallowed the goal despite the opposition protests. Newbury continued to press forward but there was a certain lack of urgency in front of goal. Minutes before half time Lisa Duncan steadied the nerves with an excellent shot into the top right hand corner of the net after receiving a cross from the right wing.

Newbury came out in the second half with a much more positive approach attacking the goal strongly from both wings. Sam Sowerby scored the 3rd after a strong run direct on goal from the right stricking the ball low to the keeper's right hand. Leanne then ended her goal drought when the keeper was unable to collect the ball at the edge of the area. Finally Sam scored her second with another strong driving run direct at goal from way out on the right, again beating the keeper with a well taken shot. Sam was justifiably awarded the player of the match by the opposing team.
