Match Report -- Season 2004-5
Thames Valley Counties Women's League Division 1 28th November 2004
Chesham United Reserves 1 AFC Newbury Ladies 5
Newbury bounced back from the disappointing result in the County Cup last weekend to comprehensively beat Chesham United in the league match to maintain their 100 % league record this season. The start did not auger well when they conceded a goal in the first 2 minutes when they failed to clear a cross. However after this early setback Newbury seldom looked likely to lose this game which was played on a pitch that was frankly unfit. Chesham decided to play down the hill in the first half but this did not play into their hands. Newbury pressed the ball well in their opponents half which kept them out of the mud in their own half. They opened the scoring after 25 minutes from an excellent free kick from Leanne Cresses after a foul on Lisa Duncan near the left hand corner flag. Kendall Gilmour headed home powerfully over the keeper. Ten minutes later Kendall was on hand again to tap the ball into the net after the goal keeper dropped a difficult high ball from Lisa Duncan.

In the second half Newbury were playing into the mud which made the ball extremely difficult to control. However they coped with the conditions far better than the opposition. Most of the half was played in the Chesham half which by now was a quagmire. Chesham seldom broke into the Newbury half and when they did central defenders, Gemma Povey and Hannah Burgess, dealt with the situation with great confidence. Lisa scored after 10 minutes when the keeper was unable to hold onto a Kendall shot and she scored again after another 10 minutes from an excellent move when the ball was passed across the defence to the drier ground where Lisa drove a powerful left footed shot over the keeper. 3 minutes later Caz Harkness sealed the victory tapping in a ball from inside the 6 yard box as players from both sides scrambled for the ball.
