Match Report -- Season 2004-5
Thames Valley Counties Women's League Division 1 12th Sept 2004
AFC Newbury Ladies 6 Mansfield Road 2
Newbury played their first league match in the newly formed Thames Valley Counties Women's League against Mansfield Road. Newbury were determined to get a good start to the league season following last weeks FA Cup victory but started a little tentatively. However after a nervous opening 10 minutes Newbury started to impose themselves on the game and a third of the way into the half Kendall Gilmour opened the scoring with a well taken goal. This was followed 5 minutes later with a goal by Leanne Creese. Newbury continued to dominate the game in midfield for the next 15 minutes without further success but as half time approached they seemed to lose concentration allowing the opposition back into the match. Holly Randall, in goal, made a fine save from a shot from the edge of the area pushing the ball from just under the bar round the post for a corner. Three minutes before half time Mansfield Road put in a dangerous cross from the right wing which was turned in to make the score 2-1. The goal galvanised Newbury and within a minute Kendall had restored the 2 goal lead.

The second half was very similar to the first. Newbury had most of the possession with Kendall and Lisa Duncan scoring midway through the half. Mansfield Road were dangerous on the break but the Newbury defence held up well and Holly made a couple of fine saves, deflecting one shot onto the post that seemed destined for the net. Three minutes from the end Mansfield Road scored an almost identical goal to their goal in the first half. Again this woke Newbury up and this time Caz Harkness scored within a minute to wrap up a 6-2 win.
