Match Report -- Season 2004-5
Pre-season friendly 1st August 2004
AFC Newbury Ladies 1 Millwall Lionesses 5
Newbury Ladies played their first home match of the new season at Faraday Road Stadium in a pre-season friendly against Millwall Lionesses of the Women's Premier league Southern Division. The weather was very hot so the game was played in 4 quarters to allow for mid half drinks. For most of last season Newbury played 3-5-2, but for this game they opened 4-4-2 with Kelly Doe starting at right back for rather than her regular position of midfield. Newbury adapted to this new shape well and clearly surprised Millwall with the quality of their football.

Although Millwall had more attempts on goal Chloe Hunt who was also in a new role, having played striker for most of last season, showed great awareness and made some excellent saves. Newbury was certainly having as much ball in midfield and were rewarded with the only goal of the first half when Caz Harkness received the ball about 25 yards out in front of the goal striking an unstoppable shot over the keeper's reach. This clearly raised Newbury's game and Millwall began to look a little ragged. Newbury were winning plenty of the ball in midfield and the defence was solid. Hannah Burgess had an excellent half in central defence coming forward to pick up lots of ball.

Being a friendly the second half saw lots of changes and Newbury reverted to 3-5-2. Initially Newbury continued to cause Millwall problems and they were really unlucky not to go 2-0 up when Kendall Gilmour's shot was well saved by the advancing keeper. With Newbury tiring in the heat and Millwall's experience beginning to tell, they managed to get in front and eventually ran out winners 5-1. This was an excellent game enjoyed by both teams and showed that Newbury have the potential to compete at a much higher level.
