Match Report -- Season 2004-5
Thames Valley Counties Women's League Cup Semi-final
6th March 2005
AFC Newbury 6 Denham United Youth 0
Newbury had a lot to prove at the start of this game. Newbury and Denham currently head the League with Newbury ahead on goal difference with Newbury having lost 2 of their last 3 league matches including the top of the table game against Denham 3 weeks ago.

Newbury took the field with the same players as the league game against Denham but with a significant change of shape. Sam Sowerby joined Kendall Gilmour up front, while Leanne Creese joined Caz Harkness and Chelsea Starbuck in central midfield. It was clear from the start that Newbury were determined to revenge their league defeat and Chelsea opened the scoring after a quarter of an hour with an excellent shot from distance over the keeper into the top of the net. She was unlucky not to repeat this 10 minutes later but this time the keeper managed to make the save. Sam came close to achieving the same thing when being put through by Caz but her shot went over the bar. Denham then made a rare break down the left and Chloe Hunt made an excellent save on the edge of her area to preserve Newbury's lead. 5 minutes before half time Sam was rewarded with a goal to give Newbury a well deserved half time lead.

The second half saw Newbury take complete control of the game. With the extra player in central midfield Caz, Chelsea and Leanne were winning plenty of ball and with Kendall playing an authodox centre forward role there was plenty for the home spectators to enjoy. First Caz put the ball over the bar from the left then following a neat move down the left with Kelly Doe and Leanne involved Sam was unable to get an accurate final touch on the ball from the cross. Then from another move started by Kelly Leanne put the ball over the bar.

Kendall then scored the first of her hattrick from the edge of the box with a static Denham defence. Moments later played a quick ball onto Caz who put it through instantly for Kendall who beat the keeper with a well placed shot to the left corner of the goal. Kendall then hit the bar from the left. Shortly after this Sam had won the ball, Leanne crossed for Kendall to score her hattrick. A minute later Caz passed the ball to Kendall who with a neat back header over the defence opened the way for Sam to run through for her second. With minutes to go a frustrated Denham player lashed out at Caz and received a second yellow card and was sent off.

The final is on 17th April at Chalfont St. Peter FC at 4 p.m. against either Reading Girls or Woodstock Town.
