AFC Newbury Ladies Football
Match Report -- Season 2004-5
FA Women's Cup in Partnership with Nationwide 2nd Qualifying Round
26th Sept 2004
AFC Newbury 2 Brentford 4
After a tentative opening 10 minutes Brentford began to exert real pressure on the Newbury midfield. The Brentford midfielders were providing close support for each other so that when the ball ran free it was usually to one of their players. This resulted in further pressure on the Newbury defence. For the next 20 minutes it looked like Brentford might run away with the game but their finishing let them down. Not withstanding this Newbury were still creating the odd chances and could have taken the lead. The Brentford pressure paid off and they gained 2 goals before half time when their central striker, who was particularly quick, was able to defeat the Newbury defence. Towards half time Newbury gained in confidence and had more of the game and overcoming the 2-0 lead was certainly possible.

Newbury got off to the worst possible start in the second half conceding a goal immediately after half time. However this did not affect them as they played with great determination in the second half. The midfield battle was no longer one sided and Newbury were creating lots of chances. It looked like they were never going to score when, 20 minutes into the half, Kelly Stokes put a strong shot under the diving keeper to make the score 3-1. Again the worst possible outcome occurred as Brentford immediately restored the lead. This was followed by a further series of attacks which resulted in a goal by Caz Harkness striking a shot wide to the right of the sprawling keeper. With 15 minutes to go the excitement in the crowd rose and Newbury had several opportunities to make the score 4-3 but to no avail. Brentford ran out worthy winners leaving Newbury to ponder what might have been.
