AFC Newbury Ladies 7 Morden Utd LFC 2
Newbury opened their competitive season with their first venture into the FA Women's Cup. Having drawn a tie against fellow newcomers to the cup, Morden Utd, Newbury made the best of the home advantage with a comfortable win. It took Newbury a little time to settle and they were put 1-0 down when a Morden midfielder was left unchallenged just outside the box. She struck the ball well into the top left hand corner of the net out of, Sue Hewett, the stand-in goalkeeper's reach. Almost immediately however Chelsea Starbuck struck back with an even better effort from 25 yards. The game settled a bit and Newbury began to apply pressure with several shots which were either wide of the target or well saved by the keeper. Morden still looked dangerous, particularly down the right hand side. Newbury adjusted the midfield to counter this threat but, while Newbury's defence was still coming to terms with playing with a back four, rather than three as they had played last season, Morden scored a second goal. Leanne Creese brought the tie back to 2-2 as Newbury began to take control of the match. Kendall Gilmour, with 2 goals, and Kelly Stokes put the game out of reach of Morden to make the score 5-2 at half time.

In the second half Newbury were in complete control as the exceptionally hot weather began to take its toll. The Morden defence was visibly suffering and several Newbury players had opportunities to extend the lead but were frustrated by the Morden keeper who stood up well to the attack or the shots were high over the bar. In the last 15 minutes Kendall and Leanne were finally rewarded with a goal each to seal a fine victory.
