AFC Newbury Under 14 Girls Football
Match Report Season 2003-4
PHYL Under 14 Girls 10th January 2004
AFC Newbury U14 0 Hatch Warren 2
Both teams played this game with plenty of commitment and good football. The only difference between the teams was that Hatch Warren created more scoring opportunities which meant that Jennie-Rae and Lucy who played in goal in the two halfs had more to do than the Hatch Warren keeper. The first half was very even, probably edged by Newbury in terms of possession, with Georgie and Jen working well together to control the Hatch Warren attack. However midway through the half Hatch Warren scored a well taken goal with a shot from outside the box into the top corner of the goal. Newbury were not disheartened by this and continued to press forward. In particular Sophie Mason and Lucy Ward had strong runs from midfield but they were forced to shoot wide by excellent defending.

IThe second half was similarly competitive, although Hatch Warren created a number of scoring opportunities and Lucy Ward in goal had plenty to do saving several well hit shots that were on target. Again Newbury had breaks from midfield involving all the outfield players and Sophie Mason was unlucky when one low hit shot rebounded off the post having beaten the goalkeeper. Newbury were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty midway through the half when the ball hit the raised arm of a Hatch Warren defender. Three minutes from the end Hatch Warren had a free kick just outside the area and the shot was unfortunately deflected by a Newbury player into the net giving Lucy no chance to save it.

This was an excellent game enjoyed by all the players and spectators. It showed a considerable improvement in the Newbury team compared with te away fixture against Hatch Warren earlier in the season.
