AFC Newbury Under 14 Girls Football
Match Report Season 2003-4
PHYL Under 14 Girls 3rd January 2004
Down Grange 2 AFC Newbury 2
Newbury were playing their first game since the end of November. Both teams were showing signs of the long layoff due to the bad weather before Christmas. Newbury started well and 6 minutes into the game Emma Cheralbrier opened the scoring with a strong low shot from the right on the edge of the goal area. This settled Newbury and much of the first half the game was played in the Down Grange end of the pitch and Emma Hunt had little to do in goal. Georgie Bingham and Jen Harkness were combining well in defence with Georgie, in particular reading, the game well. Lucy Ward and Jennie-Rae Winter were all over the pitch but Newbury's possession did not lead to any more goals as the scoring chances generally went wide of the goal.

The second half started much as the first half and this resulted in a goal by Sophie Mason whose shot was low to the keepers right and she was unable to prevent the ball from crossing the line. It seemed at this point that Newbury would gain a comfortable win but a Down Grange break caused some confusion in the Newbury defence and the ball was scrambled into the net out of Emma's reach. This gave Down Grange renewed enthusiasm and they pressed forward to score another goal which just crossed the line out of Georgie's reach. This set up an exciting last 10 minutes in which Newbury tried to break down the opposition defence to restore the lead but to no avail.
