AFC Newbury Under 14 Girls Football
Match Report Season 2003-4
PHYL Under 14 Girls 29th November 2003
AFC Newbury 0 Wolversdene 5
Newbury opened positively in a match played in awful conditions of high wind and rain. Electing to play with the wind in the first half for the first 20 minutes the game was almost entirely played in the Wolversdene half. Newbury were playing with some confidence and getting first to the ball but the Wolversdene defence kept Newbury out and their goalkeeper made a couple of good saves. However after 21 minutes A Wolversdene attack led to a goal much against the run of play when the Newbury defence failed to challenge a shot in front of goal which gave the goalkeeper no chance. This changed the game as Wolversdene realised that a win was possible and scored 2 more goals before halftime.

In the second half Newbury was playing into the wind and the game was then almost a reverse of the first half with the ball in the Newbury end for much of the half with the occasional attack on the Wolverdene goal. Emma made some good saves in goal and the 2 goals that Wolverdene scored were again due to momentary lack of concentration in defence. Considering the conditions it was actually an enjoyable game which was well contested in good spirit. Wolversdene deserved the win as they took their opportunities well but Newbury deserved credit for their play.
