Match Report Season 2003-4
PHYL Under 14 Girls 11th October 2003
AFC Newbury 1 Down Grange 0
Rachel Butler's first game of the season marked a significant change for this team ending their losing sequence. With Rachel having a solid game at the back interspered with her strong runs out of defence, the team looked far more balanced than in the opening games of the season. Jen Harkness has formed a good partnership with Rachel and looked far more comfortable in the defensive midfield position. Sophie Mason and Jennie-Rae were tireless around the field but it was left to Sophie Gosling to cap the win with a fine goal, early in the second half, turning onto a through ball and hitting the ball with great power into the back of the net.

Newbury were unlucky not to add to the score with several shots that either hit the post or went just wide. Emma Hunt playing her second game in goal tidied up everything that came her way and made one excellent save. The last five minutes were a bit panicky with Down Grange trying for an equaliser and with Newbury tiring but they held on for a well deserved win in a game played in good spirit by both teams which was well refereed.
