AFC Newbury Under 13 Girls Football
Match Report Season 2003-4
PHYL Under 14 Girls 7th February 2004
AFC Newbury U14 1 AFC Newbury U13 2

The return fixture between the two AFC Newbury teams in the Peter Houseman League this season was played at Henwick Playing Fields. This was a much closer fixture than the opening game of the season which was dominated by the defences of both teams. In the end however the game was resolved in favour of the under 13 team by the power and skill of Rachel Mulvaney. The game opened with an early goal for Rachel who was left unmarked in the box. The ball was crossed from the right and Rachel hit the ball, first touch, straight into the back of the net giving the Jennie-Rae in goal no chance. Rachel was never given that space and freedom again. Georgie Bingham man-marked Rachel for the rest of the game and she was backed up by Rachel Butler. At that time it looked like the under 13s would dominate the game but Sophie Mason made a strong run from the left and struck back with a well taken low shot to the right of Carly Passfield in goal to level the score. The contest now become very even with play at both ends but Lauren Seldon and Charlie Cooper in the under 13 defence dealt with most of the attacks conceeding corners and goal kicks where necessary. Just before half time the balance was tipped in favour of the under 13 team when Rachel Mulvanney was tripped and gained a free kick 20 m from goal. She took the free kick which was struck hard and straight but hit the left hand post. Zoe Davie was on hand to tap in the rebound.

The second half was keenly fought, with Rachel Mulvanney working hard to increase the lead and with the under 14 defence doing everything to stop the attacks, conceeding the odd foul in desperation on occasion, including giving away a penalty for hand ball. Rachel took the penalty which was struck hard but this was cleared by Lucy Ward who was now in goal. The under 14s continued to attack, Rachel Butler making strong runs out of defence on several occasions but their shots were mostly wide until just before the end when Sophie Mason picked up the ball wide on the left and ran towards the goal almost repeating her score in the first half, but the shot was saved this time by Carly to keep to score at 2-1.

This was an excellent game enjoyed by all the players and spectators and showed the improvements in both teams this season, particularly the defences.
