AFC Newbury Ladies Football
Match Report -- Season 2003-4
Berks and Bucks County Women's League 28th March 2004
AFC Newbury 0 St Edmunds 3
This match was a rerun of the league plate semi-final 3 weeks previously when Newbury won after a penalty shootout. St Edmunds returned to Faraday Road determined to confirm their second place in the league and not suffer a second defeat. The first half was very competitive with both teams having opportunities to score after St Edmunds had taken an early lead in the second minute of the game. Both keepers were in action throughout the half as the game went from end to end. Just before the end of the half St Edmunds were reduced to 10 when one of their players damaged her knee.

The second half saw St Edmunds really raise the pressure on Newbury who conceded a penalty after 20 minutes. The penalty was well taken giving Sarah Jones in goal no chance. Newbury responded well to this and Kendall Gilmour and Kelly Mosher both had shots saved by the keeper. With 10 minutes to go 2 players collided while challenging for the ball on the edge of the Newbury area and the ball ran loose to a St Edmunds player who lobbed it over Linda Hunt who was now in goal to make the score 3-0 to the visitors. The St Edmunds player fell awkwardly after the challenge and had to leave the game with a suspected broken wrist. For the final minutes Newbury played some good football but were unable to break down a committed and determined team.

This was a very competitive game which suffered from a lot of stoppages. St. Edmunds certainly look good value for their second place in the league.
