AFC Newbury Ladies Football
Match Report -- Season 2003-4
Berks and Bucks County Women's League 25th January 2004
Milton United 1 AFC Newbury 3
Playing down the slope in the first half Newbury opened the match with good early pressure with the ball in the net disallowed for offside. Kendall Gilmour brought some good saves out of the Milton keeper and one excellent move from the back involving Leanne, Hannah, Chelsea and Kendall resulted in a fine shot from Chloe Hunt which beat the keeper but rebounded off the near post. Newbury had a penalty turned down when Chelsea's feet were taken away. Milton had the occasional breaks which were dealt with by Emma Paterson in goal coming smartly off her line. It seemed however that Newbury's ininability to convert scoring chances into goals would plague them once again. However three minutes from halftime Kendall picked up a loose ball on the edge of the area and put a looping shot over the stranded Milton keeper into the top right hand corner of the net.

With the advantage of the slope Milton were able to apply more pressure at the start of the second half, but it was once again that Newbury conceeded a goal on the counterattack breaking though the middle leaving the striker to beat the advancing Emma in goal with a well taken shot into the bottom left hand corner. Newbury resumed their attacking and were able to apply sustained pressure particularly on the right wing. After 22 minutes Leanne broke up the right hand side and made an excellent cross to the far post where Kendall was waiting for the simple tap in. With the fresh legs of Lorna Parr and Sarah Jones coming on a substitutes Newbury were now able to contain Milton in their half. But for a couple of minutes of disorganised play when Milton were nearly given an opportunity to equalise Newbury dominated the remainder of the game. With 6 minutes to go, after an excellent build up, a strong shot by Kendall rebounded to Caz Harkness who hit a low shot just inside into the far left corner of the goal to seal a well deserved victory.
