Match Report -- Season 2003-4
Berks and Bucks County Women's League 18th January 2004
AFC Newbury 0 Wycombe Wanderers 2
Newbury fielded a slightly different team this week as several regular players were unavailable for selection. Emma Paterson and Lorna Parr were playing their first league game for Newbury. The first half was well contested. With Caz Harkness playing a free role in midfield several scoring chances for Kendall Gilmour and Sarah Jones were created by Newbury. Unfortunately these chances either were saved by the Wycombe keeper or the shots were wide of the target. Interspersed with these attacks were the occasional dangerous breaks by Wycombe. These were dealt with by the defence and Emma in goal but on one occasion by the post. Unfortunately for Newbury one minute before halftime Newbury conceded a penalty when Hannah handled the ball on the line. Wycombe converted the penalty with a well taken shot well out of Emma's reach in goal.

In the second half Newbury did not quite have as much of the play but they still were creating chances while Wycombe relied on the counterattack. Midway through the half Caz had an excellent curling shot which was destined for the top corner and was just pushed round the post by the Wycombe Goalkeeper who was made player of the match by the Newbury players after the game. Wycombe put the game out of reach when they scored on the break when their centre forward put the ball low and wide of Emma in goal. This match could easily be described as one that got away. If Newbury had been able to convert the opportunities, particularly in the first half, they would have won this match comfortably.
