AFC Newbury Ladies Football
Match Report -- Season 2003-4
Berks and Bucks County Women's League 14th December 2003
AFC Newbury 2 Chesham Utd Ladies 3
The 2-3 score in this match has become a regular event. The last four league and league cup matches have resulted in the score against Newbury. It was another game in which Newbury played all the football but were unable to convert their possession into goals. Early in the game, in particular, Newbury had several opportunities to score. Chelsea Starbuck, playing in goal in Sarah Jones's absence, had nothing to do for the first 25 minutes when very much against the run of play a Chesham break resulted in a goal. Minutes later Chesham could have had a second but for an excellent save by Chelsea.

The start of the second half saw renewed pressure by Newbury but 12 minutes into the half the defence was caught which resulted in an easy goal for Chesham. 2-0 at this time did not reflect the game at all. 5 minutes later Kendall Gilmour restored some order with a simple tap in after beating the defence and goalkeeper. Almost immediately Chesham regained their 2 goal lead when the Newbury defence failed to clear a through ball which left Chelsea with no chance. Newbury raised their game and Kendal scored an excellent goal after spotting the Chesham keeper off her line. The last 20 minutes saw plenty of action in the Chesham half especially when Chelsea swapped shirts with Kelly Saunders who was tiring after playing an excellent first game for Newbury. Unfortunately the third goal, which would have given Newbury a much deserved draw, did not come.

On Wednesday 17th December Newbury play Thatcham Ladies in a Charity Match at Thatcham Town FC in aid of the Breast Cancer Appeal. Kick off is at 8 p.m.
