AFC Newbury Ladies Football
Match Report -- Season 2003-4
Berks and Bucks County Women's League 7th December 2003
St . Edmunds FC 3 AFC Newbury 2
The game opened with an early strike by St Edmunds which Sarah Jones deflected onto the crossbar. Newbury then applied some good pressure which resulted in several shots on goal. When St. Edmunds did attack this was dealt with effectively by Newbury. Hannah Burgess was particularly dominant in the centre of the defence. Newbury were playing some particularly neat football out of defence generally passng the ball out rather than long kicks. Newbury were also generally getting to the ball first in midfield with Leanne Creese all over the pitch. However midway through the half St. Edmunds applied some pressure and scored with a lobbed shot which deceived Sarah due to the low sun. Within a minute Kendall Gilmour had equalised. Newbury continued to attack and both Kendall and Chloe Hunt had opportunities to score but the shots went wide of the goal. The 5 minutes before halftime saw Newbury defending but they resisted the pressure to keep the score at 1-1.

The second half started as the first half ended with St. Edmunds on the attack. They made 2 attacking substitutions after 5 minutes. 9 minutes into the half, a St. Edmunds through ball left the attacker one on one with Sarah in goal and they scored their second goal. This deflated Newbury somewhat and a few minutes later St. Edmunds scored again to make the score 3-1. Newbury recovered from this setback and started to play as they had in the first half. They were rewarded with a fine goal by Chloe 12 minutes from the end which set up a good finish to the match but Newbury were unable to force a much deserved draw.
