Match Report -- Season 2003-4
Berks and Bucks County Women's League 19th October 2003
AFC Newbury 6 Holmer Green 5
This game at the Faraday Road Stadium kept the spectators literally on the edge of their seats right up to the final whistle. After just 6 minutes Holmer Green won a penalty when Gemma caught the heels of the attacking player in the area. The penalty was taken well giving Sarah no chance in goal. Almost immediately after this Chloe was unlucky not to equalise when she hit the left hand post, the ball rebounding out of reach of the Newbury attack. The Holmer Green goalkeeper was kept busy throughout the first half while Sarah had little to do. Holmer Green were however very quick on the break and twice, in the 24th and 36th minutes, got behind the Newbury defence to score and lead 3-0 at the interval.

Whatever coach, Ed Burlison, said at halftime did the trick as within 4 minutes of the restart Newbury had pulled the score back to 3-2 with goals by Kendall and Chloe. After 18 minutes though it looked like the good work had been undone as Holmer Green scored on the break when their right winger again outsprinted the Newbury defence. Newbury did not give up and continued to attack. Chloe scored a second and with 10 minutes to go Caz equalised to set up a truly exiting ending to the game. Newbury were pressing hard and were rewarded by an own goal as a defender tried to clear a dangerous cross from the right hand corner. With 3 minutes to go Leanne drove hard into the goalmouth and shot to see the ball cleared off the line but straight back at her as she followed in. The ball rebounded off her into the net. This might have finished off any other team but not a determined Holmer Green who immediately returned to the attack to make the score 6-5 in the 90th minute through their right winger who was their player of the match.
