Match Report -- Season 2003-4
Berks and Bucks County Women's League 28th September 2003
Wycombe Wanderers Ladies 6 AFC Newbury 3
With 3 players who played the opening game against Chesham United unavailable Newbury was only able to field 9 players against last season's league title holders there was some trepidation amongst the Newbury supporters about the outcome of this match away at High Wycombe. This was proved totally unfounded as during the first 20 minutes play Newbury completely dominated the game. In particular Kendall Gilmour was outstanding in her efforts not allowing the Wycombe midfield and defence any time to settle. Sarah Jones playing her first game in goal did not touch the ball during this time which was played almost entirely in the Wycombe half. Towards half time however Wycombe seemed to come to terms with having 2 extra players and, with Newbury appearing to tire, scored 3 goals, one immediately before half time. Newbury however had had opportunities to score with Caz Harkness side footing a pass from Kelly Doe into the net. Unfortunately it was from an offside position.

The second half started with a well taken goal by Chelsea Starbuck which set the scene for an excellent second half in which both teams scored 3 goals. The play was from end to end and Sarah was gaining rapidly in confidence making quick and positive decisions to clear up her area. Midway through the second half came a goal which could easily be a contender for goal of the season. Emma Theochari picked up the ball in the Newbury half and, after a stuning series of passes between her, Caz and Chelsea, Caz chipping the ball over the goalkeeper with her left foot. All the spectators were left wondering what the score might have been if Newbury had had 11 players.

Newbury play the first home game of the season against Milton United at Faraday Road on the 5th October. Kick off at 2 p.m.
