AFC Newbury Ladies Football
Match Report -- Season 2003-4
Charity Match in aid of the Breast Cancer Appeal 17th December 2003
Thatcham Ladies 4 AFC Newbury 1
This friendly match was played under floodlights at Thatcham Town FC's ground on a cold evening with the ground getting harder throughout the game. The first half was played very much in the Thatcham half with the occassional break by Thatcham. Caz Harkness and Leanne Creese were dominating the midfield. Leanne playing a more central role than usual allowed Caz to get forward. However it was Thatcham who were to take the lead when Karen Churchill, who had organised this fixture in aid of the Breast Cancer Appeal, collected a pass on the right and skilfully lobbed the advancing Emma Paterson playing her first game in goal for Newbury. Newbury resumed their attacks and were rewarded with a goal from Kendal Gilmour to make the score 1-1 at halftime.

Just after the start of the second half Thatcham were awarded a disputed penalty which was well taken. This seemed to be a turning point in the game and Thatcham's experience began to tell. They scored 2 more goals during the half and although Newbury continued to play good football their opportunities were not as frequent as in the first half.

It was an enjoyable game watched by a good crowd and over £600 was raised for the charity. It was agreed by everyone that this fixture should become an annual event.

Newbury's next league fixture is at home to Wycombe Wanderers Ladies on the 18th January 2004.
