Match Report -- Season 2003-4
Berks and Bucks County Women's League Cup 1st Round 30th November 2003
AFC Newbury 2 Wycombe Wanderers Ladies 3 (after extra time)
After what was their best performance of the season it seemed impossible to see how Newbury had lost this 1st round league cup match against Wycombe Wanderers. The pitch was declared fit after the heavy rain on Saturday. In a goalless first half Newbury created several scoring opportunities but the shots from Chloe Hunt and Kendall Gilmour were either wide of the goal or dealt with by the Wycombe keeper. Leanne Creese and Caz Harkness were dominating central midfield and the few Wycombe attacks were well dealt with by the defence.

As the second half started, so did the rain. The game continued as in the first half until a rare break by Wycombe saw them score after the Newbury defence failed to clear a loose ball in the 6 yard box. Newbury immediately resumed the attack and within a minute Kendall equalised after leaving the Wycombe keeper stranded away from her goal. Newbury continued to attack and this led to a tremendous goal by Kendal driving in an unstoppable shot after a cross from Leanne wide on the right. Newbury did not relax at this point and continued to play all the football. Wycombe then scored after breaking through the middle on a rare attack which left Sarah in goal stranded one on one with the attacker who equalised with about 15 minutes to go. With the floodlights now on both teams went for the winner. Newbury had the best opportunities and were denied a penalty when Kendal was brought down in the area but the referee saw no offence.

With the score at full time of 2-2 half an hour of extra time was required. This was again dominated by Newbury but Wycombe had the luck. After 10 minutes Wycombe broke through the centre. Sarah saved the shot but the ball rebounded off her onto the attacker and into the net. Try as they might in the last 20 minutes Newbury were unable to equalise. This was an excellent game enjoyed by the spectators and showed the development of the Newbury team since the start of this season.
