AFC Newbury Girls Football Under 17
Match Report -- Season 2002-3
PHYL Under 17 Girls 22nd March 2003
AFC Newbury 0 Basingstoke 4
Yet again Basingstoke got the better of Newbury in a season of results that rarely represented the closeness of the games. In this game Newbury dominated midfield almost from the begining to the end but had few real scoring opportunities against a well organised defence. Over most of the pitch Newbury were often first to the ball but in front of goal the defenders had the upper hand. Newbury were unlucky to conceed yet another early goal after 3 minutes when a Basingstoke attacker pounced on a rebound off Caz in defence and took the opportunity well giving Hannah in goal no opportunity to stop the shot. From then on till midway through the second half Newbury dominated much of the game in midfield but were not creating many clear scoring chances. Hannah's goal clearance was the closest when the Basingstoke keeper misjudged the bounce on the hard pitch and was lucky to touch it onto the crossbar for a corner.

Unfortunately midway through the second half a mishit shot from Basingstoke went high into the air and Hannah was blinded by the strong sunlight and the ball went over her head into the goal. Basingstoke scored 2 goals in the last 5 minutes to make the score a somewhat misleading result.
