AFC Newbury Girls Football Under 17
Match Report -- Season 2002-3
PHYL Under 17 Girls 15th March 2003
Hatch Warren 5 AFC Newbury 2
Newbury had a full squad available for this match against a Hatch Warren team playing with only 5. This effectively meant that Newbury had 2 outfield teams. It was difficult for the players to get continuity which was not helped when Hatch Warren scored 2 quick goals early in the game. However after the second goal Newbury started to get into the game and had several scoring opportunities but these were always under a lot of pressure from the Hatch Warren defence who were very committed and strong on the ball. Kendal eventually scored towards the end of normal time in the first half. After about 5 minutes of added time in the first half there was an unfortunate incident which really affected the Newbury players. The ball was clearly well off the pitch but the referee, who was unsighted, waved play on. The Newbury players stopped for the throw in and did not react quickly enough. Hatch Warren scored when the ball was crossed to an unmarked player in front of goal.

Turning round 3-1 down was a harsh score compared with the run of play and this was made worse when Hatch Warren scored from a breakaway. Hannah restored something to the game by scoring her first goal of the season with a fine solo run and well taken shot
