AFC Newbury Girls Football Under 17
Match Report -- Season 2002-3
PHYL Under 17 Girls 8th March 2003
AFC Newbury 1 Basingstoke 2
The cup final between these two teams a week ago had been a disappointing game for Newbury and unfortunately was not worthy of the final. This game was. Newbury played up to their potential and the only disappointment was that they did not at least get a draw. With 2 defenders missing Newbury played with only 6. Chelsea in goal for the whole game and Caz in defence with Emma. This brought Kelly back into midfield with Kendal and Sarah played up front.

High wind affected the game, taking the ball out of play when in normal conditions it would not, but both teams seemed able to cope and there were scoring chances at both ends throughout the game. Basingstoke went into the lead after 5 minutes when, defending a corner, Kendal headed into her own net for an own goal. Both defences were working well and gaolscoring opportunities were usually under heavy pressure. Both keepers had to work hard and Chelsea made several fine saves.

Midway through the second half, after a period when the game went from end to end with both teams having opportunities to score, Basingstoke scored a second goal which didn't seem to reflect the game as a whole. Newbury continued to pressure and with 5 minutes to go Kendal scored with a tremendous shot from outside the area which, even though the goalkeeper got her hands to it, she was unable to save. A good game which went some way to make up for the disappointmenst of the week before.

Newbury play all the other teams over the next four weeks in re-arranged games so have the opportunity to finish the season with some good results.
