AFC Newbury Girls Football Under 17
Match Report -- Season 2002-3
PHYL Under 17 Girls 15th February 2003
Sandhurst 0 AFC Newbury 6
This game started when the pitch was still quite hard from the freezing overnight conditions. It was difficult to get a good grip and some of the players chose astroturf trainers rather than studded boots. However as the first half progressed the pitch started to thaw and the grip improved. For most of the first half the game was in the Sandhurst end which meant that Caz in goal had very little to do. Newbury were dominating the midfield and creating scoring chances but not putting them in the net. Most of the opportunities were going wide apart from one very ahrd shot from Kendal straight at the goalkeeper. Sarah broke the tension 5 minutes from half time scoring after an excellent build up.

In the second half Hannah went in goal. After another neat series of passes Caz placed the ball neatly onto Kendal's head to score from close in with a downward header. This seemed to settle Newbury and Kendal scored again with a strong shot midway through the second half. Sarah is gaining in confidence every week and scored again a few minutes later. Sarah was unlucky not to score a third when her low shot was initially saved by the goalkeeper who then scooped the ball in her own net for an undeserved own goal. With the score safe at 5-0 Jo able to come out of defence and was unlucky not to score. Kendal completed her hatrick a few minutes before the end of the game.

This result finally lifts Newbury above Calleva into 3rd place in the league after some disappointing results earlier in season.
