AFC Newbury Girls Football Match Report
Season 2002-3
PHYL Under 17 Girls 30th November 2002
Basingstoke 2 AFC Newbury 2

If at the start of this game a 2-2 draw was offered to the Newbury supporters, if not the players, then it would probably have been accepted. However in the end it was actually a disappointing result. With one minute to go Newbury were 2-1 up having played excellent football in all areas of the pitch. Hannah in particular had an outstanding game playing in goal for the entire match. The opposition coach was full of praise for her performance after the game.

Newbury started well in this game as they often do against Basingstoke, passing the ball neatly, particularly up front between Kelly, Chelsea and Caz. There was an element of deja-vu though when Basingstoke, after 8 minutes, scored a good goal after getting behind the Newbury defence. Newbury did not lose spirit and continued to attack as before and were rewarded with a goal by Sarah coming on as substitute midway through the half. Newbury continued to play positively even though Chelsea and Jo were both feeling unwell. Having a substitute available was proving a benefit allowing players to take a rest while keeping the pressure on the opposition.

The second half continued much as the first. Newbury had much of the game but Basingstoke were always dangerous on the break and Hannah had a lot of work to do. It was looking like a 1-1 draw when Emma made a characteristic run out of defence. The Basingstoke players retreated off her giving her a chance to shoot. A low hard shot on target was not cleared by the Basingstoke defence and Caz was able to score a simple goal from a few yards.

The last 5 minutes seemed like an eternity. Unfortunately Basingstoke managed to scramble the ball into the net with less than a minute to go. This was a good result which reflected much more Newbury's quality than their current position in the league.
