The league cup final was in the end a disappointing result for Newbury who in their last game against Basingstoke had achieved a 2-2 draw. In the first half Newbury were very lacklustre giving Basingstoke too much respect. Basingstoke were far quicker to the ball and were far more committed. Even so there were opportunities to score at both ends. Where Basingstoke were successful was that when they attacked they did so in numbers and got behind the Newbury defence. They took their opportunities well giving Caz in goal no chance with 3 quick goals midway through the first half. A penalty for a foul tackle made the score 4-0 at halftime.

In the second half Chelsea was in goal and made several fine saves. Newbury played with much more determination creating a number of scoring chances for Kelly, Sarah and Kendal but it was ultimately one of those days when nothing would go right.
