AFC Newbury Girls Football Match Report
Season 2002-3
PHYL Under 14 Girls 15th February 2003
AFC Newbury 1 Hatch Warren 0
The under 12 game at 9:30 had been delayed due to a frozen pitch but by 12:00 the pitches had thawed. Pitch 2 however was by then muddy and very slippery in places. The conditions were very difficult and there was a very cold wind. In the first half however Newbury adapted much better to the conditions than Hatch Warren and had almost all the play in the Hatch Warren half. The few breaks that Hatch Warren had were well dealt with by Rachel who had an excellent game. Jennie-Rae who was in goal for the first half had very little to do. However much pressure Newbury were applying did not result in any goals by half time. In fact Newbury had few shots on goal during this period.

In the second half Lucy W went in goal and the game seemed to change in Hatch Warren's favour. They started to apply more pressure and Lucy had to make several saves. Conditions were actually getting worse and it was becoming much colder. However Newbury did continue to attack and Jennie-Rae was unlucky not to score when the ball stuck like glue in the mud immediately in front of the goal giving the Hatchwarren goalkeeper a chance to recover the ball. Jennie-Rae had another opportunity to score a few minutes later running onto a long ball from defence. This time the shot was strongly hit and beat both the goalkeeper and the mud. For the last 10 minutes Newbury got plenty of players behind the ball to protect their 1-0 lead giving them an excellent and well deserved win.
