AFC Newbury Girls Football Match Report
Season 2002-3
PHYL Under 14 Girls 16th November 2002
Andover New Street B 0

AFC Newbury 4

Having won their first game of the season in the Cup 2 weeks previously Newbury were now able to celebrate their first win in the league. Playing against a New Street team that had held them to a 1-1 draw earlier in the season Newbury certainly looked a much improved side and they were able to score 3 goals in the first half. The first of these after 5 minutes was scored by Amy with a well taken shot from outside the goal area low to the keeper's left side. Ten minutes later Nina scored again from outside the area with another well taken shot. The whole team was working well as a unit with Lucy W in goal and Rachel and Jen in defence. Lucy H, up front, learning quickly in only her third game, scored her third goal of the season twenty minutes into the first half. Unfortunately just after this two New Street players sustained injuries which at one point left them with only 4 players on the pitch. This took the edge of the game a bit.

New Street were restored to full numbers in the second half which Newbury controlled. Jen and Amy shared the goalkeeping duties but had little to do. The game however did not get back to the liveliness of the first twenty minutes but ten minutes from full time Lucy H scored a neat goal at the far post, sidefooting in an excellent cross by Rachel who had made one of her characteristic runs out of defence.
