AFC Newbury Girls Football Match Report
Season 2002-3
PHYL Under 14 Girls 26th October 2002
Westwood 6 AFC Newbury 0

Newbury were playing against a strong Westwood side again suffered from the lack of a natural goalscorer. The match was similar to the game against Calleva. In this game Westwood scored 3 goals midway through the first half with 1 towards the end of the half. This week Jennie Rae was in goal for the first half and she made several good saves but was unable to stop some well taken goals by Westwood. Jen and Rachel were working well together in defence. Amy and Nina were working hard in midfield giving scoring opportunities to both Lucy and Nina.

In the second half Nina started in goal which brought Jennie-Rae into midfield were she had an excellent game. Unfortunately Lucy had to go off after 10 minutes with a damaged ankle which left Newbury with only 5 players. Amy came back further into defence leaving Jennie-Rae as a lone attacker. The never give up attitude of this team continued and they defended exceptionally well conceeding only 1 goal before Amy was forced to go in goal having also sustained a minor ankle injury. For the last 5 minutes Newbury started to apply pressure onto Westwood defence and were rewarded with several corners and were unlucky not to score. This effort unfortunately lead to a final goal scored by Westwood with the last kick of the match.

The Westwood manager paid compliment to the team after the match saying that he was suprised how well Newbury played considering their league position and that they were a much better team than others they had played so far this season.
