AFC Newbury Girls Football Match Report
Season 2002-3
PHYL Under 14 Girls 19th October 2002
Hatch Warren 2 AFC Newbury 1

This match was definitely the match of the season for AFC Newbury. It was a truly close contest which Hatch Warren won by the odd goal. Both teams played with 6 with no substitutes and played with an outstanding level of commitment. Hatch Warren opened brightly and applied a lot of pressure and Louise who was playing in goal had to make some important saves. However Newbury began to get hold of the ball and apply pressure when going forward and forcing errors when in defence. Rachel was again outstanding in defence and Louise was off her line quickly often acting as an extra defender. Towards the end of the first half Nina, Jen and Lucy had several opportunities which were well cleared by the Hatch Warren defence. The score was 0-0 at half time.

The second half continued as the first half finished with Newbury pressurising their opponents all over the pitch. However as often happens in football on one of Hatch Warren's breakouts from defence they scored a good goal with a low hard shot just inside the left post. Another team may have folded at this point but Newbury continued to apply the pressure and this was rewarded with a fine goal by Nina. A draw would probably have been a fair result but with about 3 minutes to go Hatch Warren scored a second goal which was again well taken. To try to achieve a draw Newbury put all their outfield players into attack but Hatch Warren managed to hold on for the last 3 minutes.

This was an excellent match which all the spectators for both teams enjoyed.
