What a time to get the first win of the season and what a time to score your first goals for the club. This team has such an excellent spirit it was great to see them win and secure their place in the semi-finals of the cup. It was a solid performance throughout the team against a Calleva team that was determined not to be beaten. Lucy opened the scoring after 5 minutes with a low and accurate shot to the keepers left. This was a well taken goal but considering her inexperience at football was superb. Unfortunately for Calleva 10 minutes into the game there was a collision between Jennie-Rae and the Calleva goalkeeper when the were both going for the ball. This resulted in the goalkeeper having to leave the pitch. Calleva having no substitutes and were reduced to 5 players.

The game continued and 20 minutes into the first half Lucy scored again with another well taken low shot having beaten the defender before shooting. Calleva were not prepared to give up and were rewarded with a goal in injury time of the first half giving Newbury a 2-1 lead at half time.

2 minutes into the second half Calleva scored again to make it 2-2. This made it an extremely interesting match which was contested throughout although Newbury had more genuine opportunities to score because Nina, who was playing in defence for the absent Rachel, Jennifer, Jennie-Rae and Amy were all closing down the Calleva players giving them no clear opportunities to shoot. What attacks did get through were well cleaned up by Louise who was playing in goal again this week. What was particularly pleasing to note in this game was how comfortable the Newbury players looked on the ball. They were all prepared to take on their opponents as well as pass the ball.

Just when it was looking like extra time with only about 2 minutes of stopage time to play Nina scored the goal that gave Newbury a 3-2 win.
