AFC Newbury Girls Football Under 12
Match Report -- Season 2002-3
PHYL Under 12 Girls 22nd March 2003
AFC Newbury 9 Basingstoke 1
A solid performance in which all the Newbury players performed well from Carly in goal to Rachel up front. Newbury had control of the game throughout but a committed Basingstoke team never gave up. During the first half Racel scored two goals but could have scored more if she had been calmer when shooting. Several shots went just wide of the goal and those on target were well saved by solid and brave goalkeeping. Poppy and Grace were controlling midfield well closing down the Basingstoke players well and any balls that made through were cleaned up well by Fi and Carly.

In the second half Newbury's dominance told with five more goals from Rachel and two from Zoe. Six goals in all including Basingstoke's were scored in the last ten minutes as the game really opened up. Zoe's first for Newbury came from her excellent positioning just in front of the keeper as she deflected a shot from Rachel past the keeper who was left stranded. She then executed a outrageous dummy jumping over the ball to allow it through to Rachel who only had the keeper to beat. By now Rachel was scoring freely by not trying to knock the casing of the ball but passing it into the net. At the end of normal time Rachel returned the compliment by making an excellent through ball to Zoe for her to run on to and beat the keeper with a well taken shot.
