AFC Newbury Girls Football Match Report
Season 2002-3
PHYL Under 12 Girls 30th November 2002
AFC Newbury 3 Kingsclere 3

Newbury were playing with 5 as Grace has her leg in plaster. They started a little sluggishly and not well organised against an improving Kingsclere side. Kingsclere opened the scoring after 3 minutes getting in behind the Newbury defence and giving Carly no chance to save the goal. Rachel was attempting to run through the Kingsclere defence which held up well under Rachel's physical pressure. Midway through the half Kingsclere scored 2 goals within a minute to put Newbury 3 goals down. Newbury certainly looked beaten for the remainder of the first half but managed to stop any further goals. Carly made several positive moves out of her goal area to clear up some dangerous looking Kingsclere breaks.

The half time break certainly gave Newbury fresh heart and Poppy moved into more attacking positions and Rachel came back making the midfield much tighter. This was rewarded within a minute of the restart with a goal by Poppy. Newbury now had much more of the play and the defence became much more organised than earlier in the game. Fi was no longer being pulled out of the middle of the defence forcing the Kingsclere attack to pass out to the wings where the retreating midfield could come back to help. When the ball did come in her direction she was able to clear the ball back up field. Rachel made the most of this scoring a goal midway through the half. With 5 minutes to go Zoe almost scored with a good low shot to the keeper's right but was unlucky to see the ball go just the wrong side of the post. With a minute to go of normal time Rachel forced the ball into the net with a typical run close to the goal to set up an exciting last few minutes.
